Eligibility Criteria and Application Process

The UK Skilled Worker Visa allows qualified professionals to work in the UK for an approved employer under a points-based immigration system.

Core Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible, you must have a job offer from a UK-based employer that holds a valid Sponsor Licence, meet the required skill level for the role (equivalent to RQF Level 3 or above), be able to speak, read and write in English at the required level, and score enough points under the points-based system.

70-Point Requirement

Under the points-based system, you must score a minimum of 70 points to qualify. Points are awarded for a job offer from a licensed UK employer, the skill level of the job, English language proficiency, and your salary level.

Points Breakdown

Typical allocations include: 20 points for a job offer from a UK-based employer, 20 points for the required skill level, 10 points for English language proficiency, and up to 20 points based on your salary.

Application Journey

Application Process and Shortage Occupations

The Skilled Worker Visa application is completed online and can be made from outside or inside the UK, following a structured sequence of steps.

Application Steps

The process includes obtaining a Certificate of Sponsorship from your UK-based employer, completing the online application form and paying the visa fee, providing biometric information (fingerprints and a photograph), submitting supporting documents such as your passport, evidence of English language proficiency and qualifications, and attending an appointment at a UK visa application centre if required.

Job Shortage Occupation List

Certain roles that face a shortage of skilled workers in the UK appear on the Job Shortage Occupation List. If your job is on this list, you may benefit from advantages such as a lower salary requirement and prioritised processing.

Validity and Extensions

The initial Skilled Worker Visa can be granted for up to 5 years, depending on the length of your job offer. You can apply to extend and stay longer, and after a continuous period of 5 years, you may be eligible to apply for settlement (indefinite leave to remain).

Benefits & Outcomes

Benefits, Job Flexibility and Visa Decision

The Skilled Worker Visa offers long-term career opportunities in the UK, with flexibility to change roles and bring family members, subject to visa conditions.

Key Benefits

With a Skilled Worker Visa, you can work for your sponsoring employer in the UK, bring your dependants (spouse or partner and children) to join you, and access various public services such as healthcare and education.

Switching Jobs

You can switch jobs within the same visa category, provided you have a new job offer from a UK employer who holds a valid sponsorship licence. You will need a new Certificate of Sponsorship and must update your visa accordingly.

Decision and BRP Collection

Once your application is processed, you will usually receive a decision within a few weeks. If successful, you will receive a visa vignette in your passport to enter the UK and must collect your Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) within 10 days of arrival.
